Exchange Virtual Directory for OMA and EAS has been overridden

The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool reads the following registry entry to determine if the SMTP proxy address for Exchange ActiveSync® has been overridden:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MasSync\Parameters\ExchangeVDir

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds the ExchangeVDir registry entry present and configured, a non-default configuration message is displayed.

The ExchangeVDir registry entry is used by Microsoft Outlook® Mobile Access and by Exchange ActiveSync. It specifies the virtual directory that Outlook Mobile Access and Exchange ActiveSync use to access Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access for Exchange Server 2003 templates and WebDAV on the Exchange Server 2003 back-end servers where user mailboxes are located.

If the ExchangeVDir entry does not exist, or if a value is not set for it, the default value of /Exchange is used. Otherwise, it contains the name of the virtual directory (including the forward slash character "/"). You can configure this value when you want to specify a virtual directory for Outlook Mobile Access or Exchange ActiveSync.

There is a known issue in Exchange Server 2003 where Exchange mobile services do not work when using forms-based authentication on a single Exchange Server 2003 computer topology. When the /Exchange virtual directory on an Exchange Server 2003 back-end server is configured to require Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), or when forms-based authentication is enabled, Outlook Mobile Access cannot access this virtual directory. This issue does not occur when you enable these settings in the /Exchange virtual directory on a front-end server.

A configuration opportunity exists to resolve this issue that involves the creation of the ExchangeVDir registry value.

  1. Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.

  2. Navigate to:

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MasSync\Parameters

  3. Examine, and if desired, change the ExchangeVDir value.

  4. Close the registry editor. If a change is made, restart the Exchange Server computer for the change to take effect.
