[This topic is intended to address a specific issue called out by the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool. You should apply it only to systems that have had the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool run against them and are experiencing that specific issue. The Exchange Server Analyzer Tool, available as a free download, remotely collects configuration data from each server in the topology and automatically analyzes the data. The resulting report details important configuration issues, potential problems, and nondefault product settings. By following these recommendations, you can achieve better performance, scalability, reliability, and uptime. The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine the value of the serialNumber attribute for all Exchange Server objects in the directory. The serialNumber attribute is a string value that includes both the version of Exchange Server and if installed, the version of the service pack installed. For example, on an Exchange Server 2003 computer that has Service Pack 1 installed, the serialNumber attribute is equal to Version 6.5 (Build 7226.6: Service Pack 1).

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds the value for the serialNumber attribute contains 6.5 and Service Pack 1 in its string, but does not contain 7226.6 in the string, a warning is displayed.

This warning indicates that the Exchange Server 2003 computer is running a pre-release version of Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1.

Note

Because Exchange service packs cannot be uninstalled, it is strongly recommended that you do a full backup of the Exchange Server computer before applying any service packs.

To correct this warning

  1. Obtain the final version of Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=29090).

  2. Review the Exchange Server 2003 Release Notes (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=23235).

  3. Review the updates included in Service Pack 1 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=34272).

  4. Completely back up the Exchange Server computer.

  5. Apply Service Pack 1 for Exchange Server 2003.

  6. Take another complete backup of the Exchange Server computer.
