Recipient Update Service software update required
Topic Last Modified: 2005-11-17
The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the CIM_Datafile Microsoft Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) class to determine the value of the Version key for the Address Book View and Dynamic Groups Service (abv_dg.dll), also known as the Recipient Update Service. The Version WMI key indicates the build number for this file.
The Exchange Server Analyzer also queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine the value for the msDS-Behavior-Version attribute of the NTDS Settings object. This value indicates the Active Directory forest functional level. Valid values for the msDS-Behavior-Version attribute are shown in the following table.
|Value||Forest functional level|
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server mixed
Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003 interim
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 native
If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that the build number for abv_dg.dll is less than 6.0.6615.0 on an Exchange server in an Active Directory forest in Windows Server 2003 interim or native mode, an error is displayed. This error indicates that an Exchange 2000 Server version of the Recipient Update Service is running in an incompatible Windows Server 2003 Active Directory forest level. An update to the Recipient Update Service is required to resolve this issue.
When you use the Recipient Update Service in Exchange 2000 Server to update recipient objects in a Windows Server 2003 forest, the Recipient Update Service does not update the objects correctly. For example, the Recipient Update Service does not recognize changes that are made to group membership. Also, if you use Exchange 2000 Server Active Directory Connector (ADC), ADC may not replicate group membership changes from Active Directory to the Exchange Server 5.5 directory.To upgrade to the latest version of Recipient Update Service
Obtain the required update by following the instructions in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 873059, "The Recipient Update Service does not update objects correctly when Exchange 2000 Server is running in a Windows Server 2003 forest" (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=3052&kbid=873059).
Apply the update. You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this update. However, Exchange-related services are automatically restarted when you apply this update.
