How to Configure an SMTP Connector When Migrating from a Non-Exchange Messaging System to Exchange Server 2003

This topic describes how to configure an SMTP connector when migrating from a non-Exchange messaging system to Exchange Server 2003. Because SMTP is the native transport mechanism for Exchange Server 2003, you do not need to install a separate connector component to configure an SMTP connector. In addition to configuring the SMTP connector to a non-Exchange messaging system, you might also want to specify the message formats that the non-Exchange messaging system supports.

Before You Begin

To successfully complete the procedures in this topic, ensure that your environment meets the following requirements:

  • You have an existing Windows network, including an Exchange organization and Active Directory deployment.

  • You can connect to TCP port 25 on the remote SMTP host. Use telnet.exe to verify that the remote SMTP host is responding with a welcome message when you connect. For details about how to test SMTP connectivity using telnet.exe, see Chapter 4, "Interoperating with and Migrating from Other Non-Exchange Messaging Systems."

  • You have Exchange Administrator permissions to configure connector components in the Exchange organization.

  • In Exchange System Manager, you have selected the Display routing groups and Display administrative groups options on the properties page for the organization object.

Procedure

To configure an SMTP connector to a non-Exchange messaging system

    Note

The newly configured connector is immediately available. Test the connector by sending e-mail messages to a user in the non-Exchange messaging system, and let the user reply to those test messages. To enable message transfer to Exchange users, you may have to specify your Exchange 2003 bridgehead server as an MX record for the SMTP domain of the Exchange 2003 organization in DNS, or as a smart host. Consult your administrator documentation for information about how to configure the non-Exchange messaging system.
