How to Disable a Mailbox

This topic explains how to use the Exchange Management Console and the Exchange Management Shell to disable the mailbox of an existing Active Directory directory service user object in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007. This task removes all the Exchange attributes from the user object in Active Directory. Based on the deleted items retention policy, the Exchange store will retain mailbox data for the user object.

Before You Begin

To perform this procedure, the account you use must be delegated the following:

Exchange Recipient Administrator role

Procedure

To use the Exchange Management Console to disable a mailbox

Start the Exchange Management Console.
In the console tree, expand Recipient Configuration, and then click Mailbox.
In the result pane, select the mailbox that you want to disable.
In the action pane, under the name of the mailbox, click Disable.
A warning appears asking, Are you sure you want to disable 'mailbox name'? Click Yes to disable the mailbox.

To use the Exchange Management Shell to disable a mailbox

Run the following command:

Disable-Mailbox john@contoso.com
```
