  1. Install Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP 1 or later on the workstation.
  2. Join the workstation to the domain with Exchange 2003.
  3. Install the Windows Administrative Tools Pack on the workstation.
  4. Install the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol service (SMTPSVC) on the workstation.
  1. On the dedicated management workstation, insert the Exchange 2003 Setup CD into the workstation's CD drive, and then locate <drive>: \setup\i386\setup.exe.

  2. On the Component Selection page, do the following:

Installation requirements for Exchange 2003

While the installation of SMTP is needed for this installation of system management tools. The requirement states that IIS is required. By selecting Internet Information Services from the add/remove windows components wizard, SMTP is automatically included with the IIS installation. Step 4 should read -

Under Before you begin 4. Install IIS version 6.0 or higher on the workstation.

I just followed these instructions, including the suggestion to install IIS instead of SMTP in and it worked.

The instructions 1, 2 and 3 under Procedure are repeated and only need to be done once.
