How to Move the MTA Database Directory

This topic explains how to use Exchange System Manager to move the MTA database directory (also known as the X.400 message queue directory) to a different location.

Before You Begin

Before you perform the procedure in this topic, consider the following:

When you modify the location of the message queue directory, you are modifying only the MTA database path and moving only the MTA database (.dat) files. You are not moving any of the MTA run files or the MTA run directory. Do not attempt to relocate the MTA run directory because doing so can cause unwanted side effects.

Procedure

To move the MTA database directory to a new location

  1. Open Exchange System Manager.

  2. Expand Servers, expand an Exchange server, and then expand Protocols.

  3. Right-click X.400 and click Properties.

  4. On the General tab, under Message queue directory, click Modify.

  5. Enter the new path for the MTA database directory.

  6. Click OK to save the changes, and OK to exit the X.400 object properties.

  7. Stop and restart the Microsoft Exchange MTA Stacks service for the change to take effect.
