How to Remove a Distribution Group

This topic explains how to use the Exchange Management Console or the Exchange Management Shell to remove an existing Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 distribution group from the Active Directory directory service.

To perform the following procedures, the account you use must be delegated the following:

  • Exchange Recipient Administrator role
  • Account Operator role for the applicable Active Directory containers

For more information about permissions, delegating roles, and the rights that are required to administer Exchange Server 2007, see Permission Considerations.

  1. Start the Exchange Management Console.

  2. In the console tree, expand Recipient Configuration, and then click Distribution Group.

  3. In the result pane, select the distribution group that you want to remove.

  4. In the action pane, under the name of the distribution group, click Remove.

  5. A warning appears asking, Are you sure you want to remove <distribution group name>. Click Yes to remove the distribution group.

  • Run the following command:

    Remove-DistributionGroup -Identity "Temporary Staff"
    

    When prompted, type Y to confirm the removal of the distribution group.
