Disk Read Latency - sustained for 5 minutes - Red(>50 msec).

Explanation

The Avg. Disk sec/Read performance counter indicates the average time in seconds that it takes to read data from the disk.

This alert indicates that the average time that it takes to read data from the disk has stayed greater than 50 milliseconds for five minutes. Other symptoms you may experience when this threshold is reached are higher than expected disk transfers per second, and depending on the disk that is reporting this error, possibly poor Microsoft Exchange server performance. This alert may be caused by a disk bottleneck.

User Action

To resolve this critical error, do one or more of the following:

  • Remove any optional applications that are contributing to disk load.

  • If a database or transaction log drive is bottlenecked, you can reduce load on that drive by moving users to a database or storage group that is hosted on a drive that is not near maximum capacity. If all the databases or transaction log drives are nearing capacity, you may have to move users to another server. For more information, see Moving Mailboxes.

  • Increase the capacity of the bottlenecked drive by adding more or faster spindles.

  • If you are having difficulty resolving the issue, contact Microsoft Product Support. For information about contacting support, visit the Contact Us page of the Microsoft Help and Support Web site.

If you are not already doing so, consider running the tools that Microsoft Exchange offers to help administrators analyze and troubleshoot their Exchange environment. These tools can help you make sure that your configuration is in line with Microsoft best practices. They can also help you identify and resolve performance issues, improve mail flow, and better manage disaster recovery scenarios. Go to the Toolbox node of the Exchange Management Console to run these tools now. For more information about these tools, see Toolbox in the Exchange Server 2007 Help.
