Information Store: Version buckets allocated - Yellow(>1800).

Explanation

The Version buckets allocated performance counter indicates the number of buckets of version store memory that are currently being used. A version bucket is a 16 kilobyte (KB) chunk of the version store. The version store is an allocation of memory where database transactions are held until they can be written to disk.

This alert indicates that you have more than 1,800 version buckets allocated. This alert usually indicates that you have a database transaction that is taking a long time to be saved to disk. You might also see an increase in the number of version buckets that are allocated during online defragmentation, when many changes are being made to the database. Other symptoms you may experience when you reach this threshold are slow client performance or Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) event 623 being logged. For more information about the version store, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 893599, You may experience slow client performance if the version store runs out of memory in Exchange Server 2003.

User Action

To resolve this warning, do the following:

  • Check if you have any client or add-in applications running on the Exchange server that have a long-running transaction that has not been saved to disk and is exhausting the version store memory resources.

If you are having difficulty resolving the issue, contact Microsoft Product Support. For information about contacting support, visit the Contact Us page of the Microsoft Help and Support Web site.

If you are not already doing so, consider running the tools that Microsoft Exchange offers to help administrators analyze and troubleshoot their Exchange environment. These tools can help you make sure that your configuration is in line with Microsoft best practices. They can also help you identify and resolve performance issues, improve mail flow, and better manage disaster recovery scenarios. Go to the Toolbox node of the Exchange Management Console to run these tools now. For more information about these tools, see Toolbox in the Exchange Server 2007 Help.
