The Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) monitors the Windows Application log on computers that are running Exchange Server 2007 and generates this alert when the event or events specified in the following Details table are logged.

To learn more about this event, do one or more of the following:

  • Review the description of the event that includes the variables specific to your environment. From the MOM Operator Console, select this alert, and then click the Properties tab.

  • Review all events that have been logged that meet the criteria of this MOM alert. From the MOM Operator Console, click the Events tab, and then double-click the event in the list for which you want to review the event description.

Explanation

This Warning event indicates that the resource manager has identified that transport resources are experiencing an excessive level of constant pressure. This excessive resource pressure causes incoming and outgoing mail submissions to pause. These submissions are paused to enable individual resources to recover from the excessive pressure. Action should be taken to relieve pressure on the transport resources.

This excessive pressure may occur for the following reasons:

  • The queuing database is under pressure.

  • The queuing database logging folder is under pressure.

  • Private bytes are under pressure.

  • Version buckets are under pressure.

User Action

To resolve this warning, follow one or more of these steps:

  • If the queuing database is under pressure, follow the steps shown here:

    • Make sure that the path at which the queuing database is installed has sufficient disk space remaining.

    • By default, there is 500 megabytes (MB) of total free space left on the disk. This space includes the free pages in the database. You can change these settings if you modify the PercentageDatabaseDiskSpaceUsedHighThreshold configuration setting in the EdgeTransport.exe.config file. The default location of the EdgeTransport.exe.config file is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\bin.

    Note

    In the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of Exchange Server 2007, this event will be logged when free space falls below 4 gigabytes (GB). This threshold was lowered to 500 MB in Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1.

    • Make sure that there is no large backlog of messages stuck in the delivery queues.

  • If the queuing database logging folder is under pressure, make sure that the drive for the logging folder has sufficient space left on it. Otherwise, free some space. By default, there is 500 MB of free space on disk. You can change these settings if you modify the PercentageDatabaseLoggingDiskSpaceUsedHighThreshold configuration setting in the EdgeTransport.exe.config file. The default location of the EdgeTransport.exe.config file is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\bin. If the database and log files are hosted on the same partition, you can run the Mail Flow Troubleshooter by starting the Extra.exe module from c:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\bin directory.

  • If private bytes are under pressure, make sure that outgoing messages in the delivery queues are not stuck and being drained out. As soon as the delivery queues are all drained out, the system will release this pressure automatically. You should consider adding more memory to the system if the following conditions are true:

    • The number of delivery queues is not the problem.

    • You have less than 2 GB of RAM.

    You can change the private-bytes-used limit by changing PercentagePrivateBytesUsedHighThreshold in the EdgeTransport.exe.config file. The default location of the EdgeTransport.exe.config file is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\bin.

  • If version buckets are under pressure, this is a measure of the I/O pressure on the system because of the database reads and writes. Therefore the system will recover itself in a short time. If you trigger this state very frequently, consider changing the VersionBucketsHighThreshold to larger values in the EdgeTransport.exe.config file. The default location of the Edgetransport.exe.config file is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\bin.
