Database has reached its maximum size limit. Perform offline defragmentation, or temporarily increase the database size limit, or upgrade to Exchange Enterprise Edition.

Explanation

This Warning event indicates that the maximum size of this database has been reached. The default database size limit for the original release of Exchange 2007 Standard Edition is 50 gigabytes (GB). The default database size limit for the Service Pack 1 release of Exchange 2007 Standard Edition is 250 GB. This limit can be changed by using this process. The Information Store database size for both the Standard and the Enterprise Edition is limited only by disk space.

User Action

To resolve this warning, do one of the following:

  • If there is free disk space, increase the size limit for the database specified in the event description. For information about how to do this, see How to Modify a Database Size Limit.

  • If there is no free disk space, perform an offline defragmentation of the database to reduce its size. Run eseutil /d to perform an offline defragmentation.

When you perform an offline defragmentation, the resulting database size of 50 GB or more may still be too large to leave in production. In this case, you can install additional hard disk space on your existing server. Or, you can add a second Exchange server in the same Administrative Group and use Move Mailbox to move half of the mailboxes to another server. Then you can perform offline defragmentation on the original server again to further reduce the size of the database. Alternatively, you can remove information from several user mailboxes and perform offline defragmentation.
