Planning Phase
The primary focus in this phase is to identify the compatibility evaluators to be run, identify the best method for deploying the compatibility evaluators, and then deploy to the selected computers.
|
High-level steps in the application compatibility Planning Phase |
---|---|
Compatibility evaluators identified Identify which of the compatibility evaluators provided in the Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) 5.0 are most appropriate for the organization, including the Inventory Collector, Internet Explorer Compatibility Evaluator (IECE), User Account Control Compatibility Evaluator (UACCE), Update Compatibility Evaluator (UCE), and the Windows Vista Compatibility Evaluator. |
|
Compatibility evaluators deployed Select the appropriate method to deploy the compatibility evaluators, including Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS), Group Policy, or logon scripts. |
|
Application inventory completed At this milestone, a database containing an inventory of applications resides on the organization’s computers. This information completes the Planning Phase. |
Developing Phase
The primary focus in this phase is the development of the application compatibility mitigations.
|
High-level steps in the application compatibility Developing Phase |
---|---|
Test lab established A test lab is useful for designing and testing compatibility mitigations, but remember that the inventory should be collected in the production environment for best results. |
|
Mitigation strategies tested Verify that the strategies address the issues and do not cause unanticipated results. |
|
Mitigation packages created The packages created will depend on the deployment method. Be prepared to create custom .msi packages to deploy through Group Policy. |
Stabilizing Phase
Testing of mitigation packages dominates the Stabilizing Phase.
|
High-level steps in the application compatibility Stabilizing Phase |
---|---|
Application compatibility mitigation strategies tested In this step, the Application Compatibility feature team should have performed test deployments of the compatibility-mitigation packages and verified their success. |
|
Strategies communicated to management and other teams To complete the Stabilizing Phase, communicate the team’s status to all teams. |
Deploying Phase
The Application Compatibility feature team hands off to the Deployment feature team in this phase.
|
High-level steps in the application compatibility Deploying Phase |
---|---|
Mitigation packages deployed When this milestone is complete, the mitigations have been deployed successfully to all target computers in the organization. |
