Appendix C: Creating Builds

To create a new build, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Deployment Workbench console tree, right-click Builds, and then click New to start the New Build Wizard.

  2. On the Specify general information about this build page, provide the following information, and then click Next:

    • Build ID. Type a unique ID for the build.

    • Build name. Type a descriptive name for the build.

    • Build comments. Type any necessary comments to record with this build—for example, an overview of the build’s configuration or purpose.

Tip   While a build’s name and comments can be changed later, a build’s ID cannot. Before creating builds, create a naming scheme for use in creating build IDs that will provide meaningful information about each build.

  3. On the Select an operating system image to use with this build page, choose an operating system image to install with this build, and then click Next.

Only the operating system images added to Operating Systems earlier are visible.

  4. On the Specify the product key for this operating system page, perform one of the following tasks, and then click Next:

    • Select Use the specified product key, and then type the product key in the Product Key box.

    • Select Do not use a product key when installing.

Note   For more information about volume activation and product keys in BDD 2007, see the Volume Activation Guide. That guide describes when a product key is necessary. Generally, volume license customers deploying Windows Vista to 25 computers or more should select the Do not use a product key when installing option. Customers deploying Windows XP Professional or using Windows Vista Multiple Activation Keys (MAKs) should select the Use the specified product key option, and then type a product key in the Product Key box.

  5. On the Specify settings about this build page, shown in Figure 9, provide the following information, and then click Next:

    • Organization. Type the name of the organization.

    • Full Name. Type the owner name to use for this build.

    • Internet Explorer Home Page. Type the URL for the default Internet Explorer home page—for example, the URL of the organization’s intranet home page.

  6. On the Specify the local Administrator password for this build page, perform one of the following tasks, and then click Create:

    • Select Use the specified local Administrator password, and then type the password to use for the local Administrator account on each destination computer. Confirm the local Administrator password by typing it again.

    • Select Do not specify an Administrator password at this time. Choose this option if the local Administrator password will be configured during deployment.

After adding a build to the distribution share, it appears in the Builds details pane. Also, it in appears the distribution share in Control\subfolder, where subfolder is the build ID. Deployment Workbench stores metadata about each build in Builds.xml, which also resides in the distribution share’s Control folder. Table 13 describes additional tasks Computer Imaging System feature team members can perform on builds they have created.
