MSI Rules

The MSI (Windows Installer) rules are used when creating or modifying software update definitions in System Center Updates Publisher. The MSI rules check a scanned computer for a specific software update, product, component, or feature. The MSI rules are most often used for prerequisite verification because MSI-based updates auto-populate applicability and installed rules.

Important

If you use MSI rules, the inventory tool cannot detect Windows Installer packages that were installed on a per-user basis. If you must use MSI rules, always configure additional detection rules, such as file versions or registry key values, so that the Windows Installer package can be properly detected, whether or not the package was installed on a per-user basis or on a per-system basis.

The following sections provide information about each MSI rule.
