Use the Receive connectors feature to maintain the default internal Receive connector and custom Receive connectors on the selected Microsoft Exchange server. When you select a Receive connector in the work pane, the name of the Receive connector section changes accordingly.

The Edge Transport server must have at least one Receive connector. The default internal Receive connector handles e-mail that is routed from inside the organization to outside the organization. The default Receive connector is also ready to receive mail from the Internet.

Each Receive connector is a unique combination of properties: the port through which mail travels, the local IP addresses, and the remote IP subnet. No other SMTP Receive connector can have the same combination of properties. When more than one connector is available on a destination computer, Exchange Server 2007 evaluates the connectors and chooses the most restrictive connector.

  • New Receive Connector…
    To open the New SMTP Receive Connector wizard and create a new connector, click New Receive Connector…. The wizard shows you the basic settings to create a Receive connector. You can specify additional settings by using the Exchange Management Shell.
  • Disable or Enable
    To enable or disable the selected Receive connector, click Enable or Disable as appropriate.
  • Remove
    To remove the selected Receive connector, click Remove.

  • Properties
    To access the following tabs, select a Receive connector, and then click Properties.

    • General tab   Use this tab to view the display-only connector status and modified date, to maintain the protocol logging level, and to modify the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) that is displayed in the HELO banner or the EHLO banner.

    • Network tab   Use this tab to maintain the local IP addresses and the remote IP subnets for receiving mail.

    • Authentication tab   Use this tab to specify security mechanisms for incoming connections.

    • Permission Groups tab   Use this tab to specify the permission groups that are allowed to submit messages to the Receive connector.
