Network Discovery Properties: General Tab

Applies To: System Center Configuration Manager 2007, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

Use the General tab of the Configuration Manager 2007 Network Discovery Properties dialog box to enable Network Discovery and specify what type of Network Discovery to run.

The General tab contains the following elements.

Enable Network Discovery
Enables this Network Discovery method for this site.

Type of discovery
Specifies what type of discovery you want the Network Discovery method to run.

The following options are available for selecting a discovery type:

  • Topology: Determines the topology of your network only, discovering IP subnets and routers. The extent of how much of your network is discovered will depend on the number of router hops selected on the SNMP tab. By default, this option is selected.

For more information, see Topology-Only Network Discovery.

  • Topology and client: Determines the topology of your network, as well as potential client computers using an IP address. If a Microsoft DHCP server is specified on the DHCP tab, potential clients leasing an IP address from that DHCP server will be included here.

If you have a large network, you might want to limit the number of router hops searched to reduce your network traffic. A maximum of 5000 potential clients per discovery is recommended.

For more information, see Topology and Client-only Network Discovery.

  • Topology, client, and client operating system: Determines the topology of your network, as well as potential client computers and their operating systems and versions.

For more information, see Topology, Client, and Operating System Network Discovery.

Enable discovery of out of band management controllers
Applies only to Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 and later.

Specifies whether to include management controllers in the network discovery.

ImportantImportant
Before management controllers can be discovered, you must install the out of band service point and configure a provisioning account. For more information, see How to Install the Out of Band Service Point and How to Add an AMT Provisioning and Discovery Account.

Management controllers are required for out of band management and must be provisioned. For more information about AMT provisioning, see How to Provision Computers for AMT.

Management controllers can also be discovered independently from network discovery. For more information, see the following topics:

Network speed
Specifies whether you are on a slow network and whether Network Discovery should make allowances for network speed. If this option is selected, SNMP timeouts will be doubled and the number of SNMP sessions will be reduced. By default, this check box is cleared.
