Enabling Schema Modifications for Windows 2000 Server Domains Using the Registry Editor

Enabling schema modifications for Windows 2000 Server domains can also be done by editing the registry on the schema master domain controller computer for Windows 2000 Server domains. This procedure should only be performed on a domain controller that is running Windows 2000 Server and also holds the schema master role.

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Domain Admins group or the Enterprise Admins group in Active Directory, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

CautionCaution
Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the computer. You can also use the Last Known Good Configuration startup option if you encounter problems after manual changes have been applied.

  4. Type Schema Update Allowed, and then pressENTER.

  5. Double-click the Schema Update Allowed registry key that you just created, and in Value data, type 1 to enable schema changes.
