Introduction to the PerformancePoint Server 2007 Operations Guide for Planning Server

This document provides database administrators and IT personnel with the information that is required to operate and maintain PerformancePoint Planning Server in a production environment. It includes the following sections:

Businesses today have a growing number of systems that collect data. These might include one or more of the following data sources:

  • Relational databases such as Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Oracle, IBM, and Sybase.

  • Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) sources such as DB2 OLAP, SSAS, and Essbase.

  • Enterprise data warehouses and data marts.

  • Mainframe sources such as COBOL copybooks, VSAM, MIS, and IDMS.

  • Line-of-business applications such as ERP, CRM, and custom and legacy applications.

Before data analysis and planning is available in the PerformancePoint business application, Planning Server must get data from one or more of the business data sources that are listed in this document.

Planning Server provides tools and methodologies to move data between its internal databases. In brief, the user should move data from any one of the data sources to a staging database. The data can then be validated and moved from the staging database to the application database.

Note

Planning Server is not a complete extract, transform, and load (ETL) process and cannot be used to construct jobs for extracting, transforming, and loading data from multiple data sources.
