Dashboard Designer deployment overview and considerations

Updated: 2008-09-29

Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 uses ClickOnce deployment technology to enable users to install Dashboard Designer from the Monitoring Central Web site.

End users can install the Dashboard Designer client on demand by visiting the following Monitoring Central pages:

  • For Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) configuration: https://<server_name>:<port_number>/Central

  • For non-SSL configuration: http://<server_name>:<port_number>/Central

To download Dashboard Designer, the user must have the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 installed on the client computer. If the .NET Framework version 2.0 is not installed, the download is not initiated.

Note

When accessing and downloading the Dashboard Designer client from a 64-bit deployment of Monitoring Server, error messages might be displayed. This is a known issue and can be resolved by clicking Run for each message as it appears.

The Dashboard Designer bits are stored in the cache and can be cleared at any time. To clear the ClickOnce cache, use the following procedure.

Clear the ClickOnce cache

  1. Navigate to the following Windows directory: C:\Documents and Settings\<LoggedOnUser>\Local Settings\Apps\2.0

where <LoggedOnUser> is the user name of the user who is logged on to the computer.

  2. Delete all the directories under C:\Documents and Settings\<LoggedOnUser>\Local Settings\Apps\2.0

  3. Restart the ClickOnce installation so that it opens up with the correct local settings.

Installing Dashboard Designer requires the PPSMonitoringWebService application pool user password. After installing Dashboard Designer, additional users must be added to the PPSMonitoringWebService application pool. To add users to the PPSMonitoringWebService application pool, use the following steps:

Add users to the PPSMonitoringWebService application pool

  1. Start IE as PPSMonitoringWebService application pool user. Note that this must be done by the user who installed Dashboard Designer.

  2. Connect to the Monitoring Central Web site with the following URL:

    http://<SERVERNAME>:40000/Central

  3. Start Dashboard Designer, then click the Office button, and then click Dashboard Designer Options.

  4. On the Options window, click the Server tab, and then type the URL for Monitoring Server and click Connect.

  5. Click Permissions, and then click Add and type the user name in the format Domain\Name to the Administrator role.

  6. Click OK to close the Monitoring Server connection window, and then click OK to close the Options window.

Domain users are now able to start and use Dashboard Designer and connect to Monitoring Server.
