Chapter 1: Deploying MapPoint Location Server

MapPoint Location Server supports two deployment scenarios:

  • MapPoint Location Server Web Service and the MapPoint Location Server database installed on a single computer.

  • MapPoint Location Server Web Service and the MapPoint Location Server database installed on separate computers (recommended).

In both scenarios, Microsoft recommends that you install MapPoint Location Server components behind a firewall. MapPoint Location Server does not support clustering or load balancing.

Single-Computer Deployment

In this deployment scenario, MapPoint Location Server Web Service and the MapPoint Location Server database are installed on the same computer, as shown in Figure 2.

This type of deployment is not recommended for a production environment and should be used only for testing and evaluation purposes.

Figure 2.  Single-computer deployment

Depending on the operating system and configuration that you use for a single-computer deployment, there are issues that you must consider:

  • If you install MapPoint Location Server Web Service on a Microsoft Windows® 2000 domain controller, each user that you provision for MapPoint Location Server requires allow log on locally permissions for the domain controller. Otherwise, users cannot log on to MapPoint Location Server even if they have been correctly provisioned.

  • If you install Windows 2003 Server on the computer on which you plan to install MapPoint Location Server Web Service, and you plan to make that computer a domain controller, you must perform the following tasks in sequence; otherwise MapPoint Location Server Web Service will not function properly:

    1. Promote the server to a domain controller.

    2. Apply the Application Server role.

    3. Install MapPoint Location Server Web Service.

Two-Computer Deployment

In a two-computer deployment, MapPoint Location Server Web Service and the MapPoint Location Service database are installed on separate computers distributed across an inner firewall to minimize security risks. The computer hosting MapPoint Location Server Web Service is located in a perimeter network, or DMZ, to permit controlled access from the Internet, while the MapPoint Location Server database and connected services, such as Active Directory, are located inside a secure internal network to mitigate the risk of unauthorized access. Figure 3 shows a typical two-computer deployment.
