Introduction

This article provides information about installing the Nextel location provider for Microsoft MapPoint Location Server. The information in this article is specific to the Nextel location provider and does not apply to providers for other mobile operators.

Requirements

MapPoint Location Server must be successfully installed before you install the Nextel location provider. For information about how to install MapPoint Location Server, see the MapPoint Location Server Administrator's Guide. For information about how to install and configure Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates for MapPoint Location Server, see the technical article, Installing and Configuring SSL Certificates for Use with MapPoint Location Server on MSDN.

To use this provider with MapPoint Location Server, you must contact Nextel to add location services to your existing service agreement and have your phones provisioned. You can contact Nextel at GPS-WP@nextel.com.

You'll also need the following information from Nextel:

  • Nextel login: Required for authenticating location requests.

  • Nextel password: Required for authenticating location requests.

  • Nextel service ID: Required for billing purposes.

  • Nextel location service URL: Required for sending location requests to Nextel.

  • Maximum processing devices: Indicates the maximum concurrent location requests that Nextel accepts as part of your contract with Nextel.

Installing the Nextel Location Provider

To install the Nextel location provider

  1. Double-click the self-extracting archive executable file.

  2. When the InstallShield Wizard starts, click Next, read the end-user license agreement, and then click Yes to proceed.

  3. On the MapPoint Location Server – Nextel Provider 1.0 page, provide the following information:

    • In Nextel login, type your Nextel client ID.

    • In Nextel password, type your Nextel password.

    • In Nextel service ID, type your service ID.

    • In Nextel location service URL, specify the URL for the Nextel location service.

    • In Maximum location age, specify the maximum acceptable age, in seconds, for a requested location. The default value is 300.

Nextel may save locations that have been obtained through recent requests. Therefore, specifying a higher value for this setting can permit faster response times. Nextel treats a value of less than 300 seconds as 300 seconds.

    • In Request timeout, specify the maximum amount of time, in seconds, to wait before a location request times out. The default value is 90.

      Important

If you set the value for Request timeout to a very low number, location requests may expire before they can be fulfilled.

    • In Location accuracy, specify the accuracy level for the locations that Nextel returns. The default value is High.

Nextel always attempts to return the most accurate location available within the allotted time, even if you set Location accuracy to Low. Setting this value to High may increase response times. Also note that not all devices are capable of being located with high accuracy.

    • In Maximum processing devices, specify the number of devices that can request locations concurrently. This value is determined by your contract with Nextel. The default value is 5.

    • In Maximum queued devices, specify the number of devices that can be placed in a queue if location requests are being processed for the maximum number of devices. The default value is 5.

  4. Click Next to review the settings, and then click Next to start the installation. If you want to change the settings, click Back.

  5. When the setup process is complete, click Finish.

Uninstalling the Nexel Location Provider

You can uninstall the Nexel location provider by using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Caution

When you uninstall a provider, all provisioned users who are associated with that provider lose the association. As a result, those users cannot locate themselves. MapPoint Location Server does not provide a mechanism for reassociating providers with more than one user at a time. If you plan to add a new provider, each user who is not associated with a provider must be reconfigured individually. In addition, when you uninstall a provider, all custom properties that you have created in the MapPoint Location Server management console are lost. You must re-create the properties after installing a new provider.

To uninstall the Nextel location provider

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Microsoft MapPoint Location Server – Nextel Provider 1.0, and then click Change/Remove.

The following message is displayed: "Are you sure you want to completely remove Microsoft MapPoint Location Server – Nextel Provider 1.0 and all of its components?"

  2. To continue, click OK, or to cancel, click Cancel.

If you click OK, the InstallShield Wizard starts and removes all MapPoint Location Server Nextel Provider components from the computer.

  3. When the wizard completes the uninstallation process, click Finish.
