Use the Manage Clustered Mailbox Server wizard to move, stop, and start a clustered mailbox server (CMS). The Exchange Management Shell can also be used to perform the tasks that are available in this wizard. Although Cluster Administrator and the Cluster.exe command-line tool can move, stop, and start cluster resource groups between nodes, you should not use either of them to manage a CMS. Instead, the preferred way to move, stop, or start a CMS is to use the Manage Clustered Mailbox Server wizard in the Exchange Management Console, or the equivalent cmdlets in the Exchange Management Shell, which are:

The Introduction page identifies the CMS to be managed in the Clustered mailbox server field. It is a good idea to verify that the correct CMS was selected when the wizard was launched.

In the Management Action area, select the task that you would like to perform and then click Next:

  • Move the clustered mailbox server to another node   Select this option to move the CMS from an active node to a passive node. This task is known as a scheduled outage, or a handoff. Performing this operation will result in a brief interruption in service. When this task is performed in a cluster continuous replication environment, the health and status of the passive node will be evaluated to verify that it will be able to mount the databases after the handoff of the CMS is completed.

    Note

    In a CCR environment, the amount of time it takes to perform the handoff of the CMS depends on multiple factors, one of which is the number of log files that need to be copied and replayed before databases are accessible from the new node. The actual time it takes to perform the handoff is logged in the Application event log, with an Event Source of MSExchangeRepl and an Event ID of 100.

  • Start the clustered mailbox server   Select this operation to start a CMS and bring all the storage groups, databases, and other CMS cluster resources online.

  • Stop the clustered mailbox server   Select this operation to stop a CMS and take all the storage groups, databases, and other CMS cluster resources offline. Performing this operation will result in an interruption in service until the CMS is started.
