About Client Access License Reports

Applies To: System Center Configuration Manager 2007, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

Client Access License (CAL) reports can be used to verify compliance and analyze current licensing needs. Summary reports provide a count of users or devices over all servers of a given type for the last 90 days and can be compared to the CAL section of a Microsoft License Statement to verify compliance. Detail reports provide information about specific users or devices and can be used to analyze CAL usage to determine whether device CALs or user CALs would be more effective for your needs.

noteNote
CAL inventory information is collected only from Windows Servers that have the Configuration Manager 2007 client installed. Servers that do not have the Configuration Manager 2007 client installed do not report to the site server.

Inventoried CAL usage for Microsoft Exchange Server is calculated based on authentication to Windows Server on servers that are running Exchange Server. Asset Intelligence CAL reports count all connections to that server as Exchange Server CALs. Therefore, if an Exchange Server is used for other server functions, the reported CAL usage for Exchange Server will be inaccurate.

ImportantImportant
In large enterprise environments, CAL reports can take several minutes to generate. Due to data volume and database architecture, CAL reports might take several minutes to run.

License 06A - Processor Counts for Per-Processor Licensed Products

This report provides the total number of processors on computers using Microsoft products that support per-processor licensing. This report contains the following columns.

Product Name
The software title.

1 Processor Servers
The number of single-processor servers in the specified collection that are running specific Microsoft software that is licensed on a per-processor licensing model.

Each line represents different Microsoft Server software. For example, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 will be represented on different lines.

2 Processor Servers
The number of 2-processor servers in the specified collection that are running specific Microsoft software that is licensed on a per-processor licensing model.

4 Processor Servers
The number of 4-processor servers in the specified collection that are running specific Microsoft software that is licensed on a per-processor licensing model.

8 Processor Servers
The number of 8-processor servers in the specified collection that are running specific Microsoft software that is licensed on a per-processor licensing model.

16 Processor Servers
The number of 16-processor servers in the specified collection that are running specific Microsoft software that is licensed on a per-processor licensing model.

Total Processors
The total number of processors in servers in the specified collection that are running specific Microsoft software that is licensed on a per-processor licensing model.

For example, if there are five 1-processor servers, four 2-processor servers, three 4-processor servers, zero 8-processor servers, and zero 16-processor servers, the total number of processors equals 25.

License 07A - Client Access License Usage - Summary

Device CALs used in last year
The number of device CALs that have been logged on servers running the listed product over the last 365 days.

License 08A - Processor Counts for Per-Processor Licensed Products

This report summarizes the usage of user and device CALs for a specific product. The report is version specific and each version of a server product will be listed on a separate line for user CALs and another separate line for device CALS.

For example, Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition is listed on a separate line from Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition. This report contains the following columns.

Product Name
The software title.

Total Servers
The number of servers that provided CAL information for the listed product

The number of user CALs that have been logged on servers running the listed product over the last 365 days.

Device CALs used in last 90 days
The number of device CALs that have been logged on servers running the listed product over the last 90 days.

Device CALs used in last year
The number of device CALs that have been logged on servers running the listed product over the last 365 days.

License 11A - Historical Client Access License Utilization

This report provides historical data for CAL usage summaries. The report presents a series of data points showing how many user CALs and device CALs were logged in the 90 days preceding each data point. Data points are created at a specific interval, as set in the Summarize Client Access License Weekly Usage Data task. For more information, see Summarize Client Access License Weekly Usage Data Task Overview. This report contains the following columns.

Date
The date the data point was created.

Product
The software title.

User CALs
The number of user CALs logged on servers running the listed product over the 90 days prior to the date listed for this data point.

Device CALs
The number of device CALs logged on servers running the listed product over the 90 days prior to the date listed for this data point.

License 12A - Servers from Which Client Access License Usage Data Cannot Be Collected

This report provides a count and list of servers from which CAL usage data cannot be collected. The report is divided into summary and detail sections.

The summary section provides a list of reasons that servers cannot provide CAL usage data and the number of servers to which each reason applies. The detail section provides a list of servers that cannot provide CAL usage data and the reason why they cannot. This report contains the following columns.

Number of Servers
The number of servers that cannot report CAL usage data for a specific reason.

Reason Code
This code designates the reason for which the servers cannot report CAL usage data. The following table shows the reason codes and their meanings.

Reason Code Meaning
