Speech Platform

Speech Platform

With the Microsoft Speech Application Platform, developers can use Visual Studio .NET 2003, ASP.NET and Windows Server 2003 to create and deploy distributed speech-enabled Web applications. This platform combines Web technologies, speech-processing services, and telephony capabilities into a single system.

The Speech Platform uses the Speech Application Language Tags (SALT) standard from the SALT Forum.

Platform Components

The Speech Platform has two major components: Microsoft Speech Server (MSS) and the Microsoft Speech Application SDK (SASDK).

MSS is the server-based infrastructure that deploys and runs distributed speech-enabled Web applications. MSS provides scalable, secure, and manageable speech-processing services that run on the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 family operating system.

The SASDK allows developers to create and test various types of distributed speech applications. It contains software, tools, and testing engines for a complete speech application development environment, as well as all the reference documentation. The Speech Application SDK is included with MSS.

Speech Application Language Tags

The Speech Platform uses SALT markup tags extensively. Application developers can use SALT equally effectively with HTML, XHTML, cHTML, wireless markup language (WML), or other standard generalized markup languages (SGML). SALT also provides dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) and call control services.

The governing body for the SALT standard is the SALT Forum, a speech industry consortium.
