Installing Without Application Center Events and Performance Logging

Installations Without Logging Functionality

Application Center uses the logging features to provide data in one place that would normally be available in many different places, or not at all. These feature can reduce administrative overhead for cluster management. These features are not available for Application Center installations without Application Center Events and Performance Logging.

The following table provides possible workarounds for some of these logging features.

Features not available

Administrative impact

Workarounds (must be done for every cluster member)

Performance view

Cluster-wide aggregation of performance data and server-specific performance data is not available.

Use Windows 2000 Performance Monitor: click the Windows Start button, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Performance.

Events view

Cluster-wide aggregation and server-specific event data is not available. Links to the troubleshooting information and Support Online is not available and there is no workaround for this.

Use Windows 2000 Event Viewer: click the Windows Start button, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.

Health Monitor alerts

These alerts are aggregated in the Application Center snap-in. This information is available in its entirety in Health Monitor, but it must be obtained in several different places. The aggregation of the alerts in the details view for clusters and members is not available.

Use Health Monitor: click the Windows Start button, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Health Monitor.

Application Center Events and Performance Counter Logging

This information is not available for archiving and reporting.

None available, except for third-party solutions.

Web monitoring

The remote monitoring features available with the Web-based Administrative client are not available. You cannot monitor your members or clusters over the Web.

None available, except for third-party solutions.

One reason to install Application Center without Application Center Events and Performance Logging is that less hard-disk space and CPU resources are used, compared to installing with it. This is usually only a concern for servers with resource problems that cannot be fixed by adding resources.

Reasons to install Application Center with Application Center Events and Performance Logging include:

  • Simplified administration.

Application Center represents a single-point-of-administration for clusters. Much of this benefit is lost without the centralized logging features.

  • Event management.

Many of the non-error level events are lost without the centralized logging features. These events might not be available in the Windows 2000 Event Viewer.

  • Special queries and reports.

Although not directly supplied by Application Center, specialized event queries and reports are simplified by the Application Center logging features.

  • Remote monitoring.

The Web-based monitoring that is provided by Application Center requires the use of the logging features. Web-based monitoring includes monitoring Web-accessible events, the performance counter chart, and cluster health.
