  • An Application Envisioning Proof of Concept Experience with Microsoft Expression Blend
    Published: 10/10/08
Expression Blend™ is a design program that allows users to quickly create compelling application interfaces for Windows and web applications. The user interface designs created in Expression Blend can be directly associated with development code. As a result, non-technical users can deliver graphical mockups of applications to software developers. Those mockups are then directly ported into the application development process. Program Managers, Analysts, and Business Process Owners within Microsoft IT used the power of this functionality to iteratively refine a proof of concept for a major line of business application. The design concept was repeatedly and easily modified. After this iterative process, developers could immediately begin to build the application from the modified design elements. Microsoft IT determined that it could increase productivity and quality for Program Management, Analysts, and Business Process Owners during the application envisioning phase.

Any organization can have special-case scenarios where some clients must be managed differently. For example, software distributions or agent cycles may require special scheduling options. You might not want to use a separate site for large-scale client settings testing. Some clients may have special inventory reporting requirements. All of this, and more, is enabled by using local policies on designated clients. The solutions are often complex, and require scripting skills. However, solutions for complex special-case scenarios are possible.

  • Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server at Microsoft
    Published: 06/04/07
Historically Microsoft used a variety of internal tools such as Source Depot and Product Studio to manage the software development process. In 2005, Microsoft decided to standardize the process and deliver a consistently high level of service support for the software development process. To do this, Microsoft IT implemented Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server (VSTF) and now supports it across multiple product development teams. VSTF provides efficient, secure and reliable storage for crucial assets such as source code files, business requirements, and artwork. Microsoft IT partnered with the VSTF development team and the Microsoft IT data center to provide a centrally managed VSTF environment that utilizes the Microsoft data center environment to provide SAN-based data storage capacity. Because Microsoft IT was the first environment to run VSTF for so many teams, the team encountered application performance issues. Microsoft IT (MS IT) discovered that, based on different deployment scenarios, multiple configurations were required based on unique server and data storage capacity needs. By establishing the multiple configurations, MS IT was able to meet the performance and storage capacity needs of different types of development groups.
