An Application Envisioning Proof of Concept Experience with Microsoft Expression Blend
Published: 10/10/08
Expression Blend™ is a design program that allows users to quickly create compelling application interfaces for Windows and web applications. The user interface designs created in Expression Blend can be directly associated with development code. As a result, non-technical users can deliver graphical mockups of applications to software developers. Those mockups are then directly ported into the application development process. Program Managers, Analysts, and Business Process Owners within Microsoft IT used the power of this functionality to iteratively refine a proof of concept for a major line of business application. The design concept was repeatedly and easily modified. After this iterative process, developers could immediately begin to build the application from the modified design elements. Microsoft IT determined that it could increase productivity and quality for Program Management, Analysts, and Business Process Owners during the application envisioning phase.

Optimizing Bandwidth at Microsoft
Published: 08/10/04
To successfully manage wide area network demand and escalating operating costs at
Microsoft, Microsoft IT assembled a small, dedicated team, tasked with identifying
and implementing ways to improve engineering, operating, and management efficiencies
for overall bandwidth consumption. Their goals were to increase network efficiency
by 12 percent and reduce costs by nine percent. Through strategies such as the rigorous
auditing of existing bandwidth usage, and more accurate forecasting of future bandwidth
needs, existing capacity was utilized more efficiently and costs reduced.

Optimizing Business Productivity Infrastructure to Fuel Business Growth
Published: 11/8/06
The Business Productivity Infrastructure Optimization (BPIO) model helps companies
build business productivity infrastructure to fuel business growth and transform
their IT infrastructure into a strategic asset. People drive business outcomes,
but companies are challenged to achieve higher information worker productivity and
effectiveness, while minimizing the cost and complexity of IT infrastructure. This
is especially challenging for IT managers, who keep the IT infrastructure running
while planning for company growth over the long term. In this webcast, we describe
how the industry-based BPIO model can help IT managers accomplish both. We provide
an overview of the BPIO model, and illustrate how Microsoft IT applied the BPIO
model and benefited from the increased business productivity.

Microsoft, like many large organizations, relies on SAP AG enterprise resource planning

require the use of the Unicode codepage. In converting to Unicode, Microsoft IT
(MS IT) wanted to cause the least impact to SAP users and interfaces, minimize downtime,
and equal pre-conversion SAP system performance. MS IT developed a process that
streamlined the conversion process requirements from one week to 22 hours. Of those
22 hours, only 15 were required for the actual conversion process. This process
included exporting data through multiple servers, minimizing export and import times,
and splitting large tables into as many as 13 packages. As a result, critical import

Using Visual Studio Team System 2005 to Measure Software Code Stability at Microsoft
Published: 10/30/07 TechNet Radio added: 02/04/08 Podcasts added: 06/11/08
A strategic initiative within Microsoft IT (MS IT) is to improve the overall productivity,
quality, and predictability of internal software development projects. MS IT partnered
with Microsoft Research to create a VSTS 2005 extension that counts lines of code
and predicts system defects. In the software development environment, insight into
the volume of code being produced, and the changes applied to that code, provide
measurements of productivity and quality. The Line of Code (LOC) counter provides
a flexible and extensible framework for automating the LOC counting process.

Virtualization Quickly and Effectively Meets the Demands of Rapidly Changing Businesses
Published: 01/23/09
When challenged with optimizing its server infrastructure, Microsoft IT faces the same physical constraints, environmental sustainability challenges, and economic pressures as other enterprise organizations. Virtualization technologies and management products, such as the Hyper-V feature of Windows Server 2008 and System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, allow Microsoft IT to deliver on two goals: support the business needs of Microsoft and build a foundation for the Dynamic IT initiative. Virtualization is a key component of this infrastructure optimization strategy and reduces cost and server provisioning time. At the same time, virtualization enhances server resource availability.

Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server at Microsoft
Published: 06/04/07
Historically Microsoft used a variety of internal tools such as Source Depot and
Product Studio to manage the software development process. In 2005, Microsoft decided
to standardize the process and deliver a consistently high level of service support
for the software development process. To do this, Microsoft IT implemented Visual
Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server (VSTF) and now supports it across multiple product
development teams. VSTF provides efficient, secure and reliable storage for crucial
assets such as source code files, business requirements, and artwork. Microsoft
IT partnered with the VSTF development team and the Microsoft IT data center to
provide a centrally managed VSTF environment that utilizes the Microsoft data center
environment to provide SAN-based data storage capacity. Because Microsoft IT was
the first environment to run VSTF for so many teams, the team encountered application
performance issues. Microsoft IT (MS IT) discovered that, based on different deployment
scenarios, multiple configurations were required based on unique server and data
storage capacity needs. By establishing the multiple configurations, MS IT was able
to meet the performance and storage capacity needs of different types of development
groups.

Team Foundation Server (TFS), Microsoft IT (MS IT) has realized significant operational,
support, and security efficiencies. Over 450 global projects within Microsoft IT
are hosted on four TFS instances, which are supported by a single operations team.
Data, which previously resided on a variety of source repositories, is now standardized
through process templates and a central data source. Development collaboration and
communication is enhanced by the consolidation of various sites, file shares, and
document repositories into a single SharePoint-integrated document store.
