How to Upgrade a Single Copy Cluster to Exchange 2007 SP1 or later

This topic explains how to use Setup.com to upgrade a clustered mailbox server in a single copy cluster (SCC) environment from the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later versions. Clustered mailbox servers can be upgraded only by using the command-line version of Setup. You cannot use the graphical user interface (GUI) version of Setup (also known as the Exchange Server 2007 Setup wizard, or Setup.exe) to upgrade a clustered mailbox server.

This procedure should be used only to upgrade a clustered mailbox server in an SCC environment. Before You Begin

We recommend that you make a complete backup of the clustered mailbox server prior to upgrading to Exchange 2007 SP1 or later versions, and again after you successfully complete the Exchange 2007 upgrade.

To perform these procedures, the account that you use must be delegated the following:

Membership in the Exchange Server Administrator role
Local administrator permissions on all nodes in the cluster

Note:
Performing this procedure results in a brief outage during the upgrade process. Exchange Setup should be run only on the passive nodes in the cluster. All nodes need to be upgraded to Exchange 2007 SP1 or later versions to be supported, but you must upgrade the nodes one at a time. After all nodes have been upgraded, the clustered mailbox server is upgraded and then brought online.

The following procedure performs an upgrade of a two-node cluster. If your SCC has more than two nodes, steps 12-15 will be repeated multiple times. In the following procedure, the designations for the active and passive nodes change. Therefore, for ease of reference in the following procedure, the original active node is NodeA and the original passive node is NodeB.

Procedure

To use Setup.com to upgrade a clustered mailbox server in an SCC environment to Exchange 2007 SP1 or later versions

Prepare NodeB to be upgraded by moving all cluster resource groups to NodeA. The clustered mailbox server can be left in an online (running) state during the first part of this procedure; however, during this procedure it will be taken offline and moved between nodes in the cluster. Perform Steps 2–11 on NodeB.
Stop any services that have open handles to performance counters. Known services that should be stopped include Performance Logs and Alerts and any Microsoft Operations Manager agents.
Stop, and then restart the Remote Registry service.
Open a Command Prompt window, and then navigate to the Exchange 2007 service pack installation files.
Run the following command:
```
Setup /m:upgrade
```
Setup performs Exchange 2007 upgrade prerequisite checks. After those are complete, Setup upgrades NodeB to Exchange 2007 SP1 or later versions.
Restart NodeB after Setup has completed the upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1 or later versions.
After the restart process is complete, log on to NodeB and open the Exchange Management Shell.
Use the Stop-ClusteredMailboxServer cmdlet to stop the clustered mailbox server. For example, you can use the following command to stop a clustered mailbox server named EXCLUS1:
```
Stop-ClusteredMailboxServer EXCLUS1 -StopReason "Upgrade to SP2"
```
Use the Move-ClusteredMailboxServer cmdlet to move the clustered mailbox server from NodeA to NodeB. This cmdlet must be run from NodeB. For example, you can use the following command to move a clustered mailbox server named EXCLUS1 to NodeB:
```
Move-ClusteredMailboxServer EXCLUS1 -TargetMachine NODEB -MoveComment "Upgrade to SP2"
```
Bring the CMS Name Resource online. To do this, complete one of the following steps:
- In the Failover Cluster Management console, expand Services and Applications. In the center pane, right-click the network name resource for the clustered mailbox server, and then click Bring this resource online.
- At a command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: cluster.exe <Cluster_Name> resource <Network_Name_(ccrname)> /online
In a Command Prompt window, navigate to the Exchange 2007 service pack installation files.

Run the following command to upgrade the clustered mailbox server that is now owned by NodeB:

Setup /upgradecms

Note:
In this command, <Network_Name> represents the name of the resource that you want to bring online, not the name of the server. Also, (cmsname) represents the name of the Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) installation.

Setup performs the clustered mailbox server prerequisite checks. After those are complete, Setup upgrades the clustered mailbox server and brings it online.

On NodeA, stop any services that have open handles to performance counters. Known services that should be stopped include Performance Logs and Alerts and any Microsoft Operations Manager agents.
Stop, and then restart the Remote Registry service.
Open a Command Prompt window, and then navigate to the Exchange 2007 service pack installation files. Run the following command on NodeA to upgrade it to Exchange 2007 SP1 or later versions:

The clustered mailbox server has now been upgraded to Exchange 2007 SP1 or later versions.

During the upgrade procedure, ownership of the clustered mailbox server changed nodes. If you want, you can move the clustered mailbox server back to the original node. You can perform the move operation by using the Move-ClusteredMailboxServer cmdlet. You can also perform the move operation by using the new Manage Clustered Mailbox Server wizard in the Exchange Management Console, which is a feature of Exchange 2007 SP1 and later versions.

How can I install SP2 on SCR which is clustered but only has one node (always active)?

Hi,

I got a problem: Our Exchange servers were designed and installed by external consultants. It has a two-node SCC mailbox server and a one-node SCR server which is also Windows/Exchange clustered but has no passive node. I do not 100% understand the reason why it was chosen. On this ond-node clustered SCR server, I have no passive node for me to move the active node to, so I don't know if and how I can install SP2.

Can someone please help me?

I want to make a query, when I'm installing Exchange Server SP2 on the mailbox server and do the installation after the server restart, and stop the cluster service with the following command: Stop-ClusteredMailboxServer SRMDEVMS01-StopReason "Upgrade to SP2 "and then moved the database so with the following command: Move-ClusteredMailboxServer SRMDEVMS01-TargetMachine SRMDEMSG03-MoveComment" Upgrade to SP2, and all is well up to this point but when I try to run the last command to update the mailbox takes me a message box that tells me that: 'please go to the control panel to install and configure System Componets' and not to do it but nothing happens and the mailboxes are down I can say that I do to solve my problem many thanks.

Answer: Run the setup /m:upgrade command in a Command Prompt. This problem occurs if you are still in the Exchange Management Shell rather than using a Command Prompt; don't forget that you need to be in the direcotry where the Service Pack Setup files are located.

Thanks for the instructions! This really works.
Only that I’m updated the industrial cluster Exchange mailboxes 2007 SP1 with 4 nodes to Exchange 2007 SP2.
A problem occurred: update passive cluster node was failed at the last stage (and even after reboot). Some Exchange services do not started.
Solution was found in article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756342 (WS. 10) .aspx. Setting ServicesPipeTimeout value to 90,000 is eliminating the problem.
My configuration : 4 x HP ProLiant DL380 G5, 20 GB RAM, Windows 2008 SP2, Exchange 2007 SCC Mailbox Role.

Don't forget to disable your Exchange-level antivirus software

I would recommend unhooking your Exchange-level antivirus software. In the case of Forefront pull up a command prompt and navigate to the Forefront directory on all nodes and run a "FSCUtility /disable" before running the SP2 install. After everything is complete just do an "FSCUtility /enable" on all nodes.
