Applies To: System Center Configuration Manager 2007, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

When the Network Discovery method is used in Configuration Manager 2007, and the Topology, client, and client operating system option is selected, routers, subnets, potential clients, and their operating systems are discovered and stored in the Configuration Manager site database. (Operating system information is needed for collections that depend on the operating system type.)

The following diagram shows what this type of Network Discovery finds when it runs on Server 1 with 0 router hops specified: subnet D, Router 1, all potential clients on subnet D, and their operating system types and versions.
