Installing the VMM Self-Service Portal

Before installing the VMM Self-Service Portal, ensure that the computer meets the minimum hardware requirements and that all prerequisite software is installed. For more information about software and hardware requirements, see Virtual Machine Manager System Requirements (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69926).

Use the following procedure to install the VMM Self-Service Portal. To perform this procedure, you must be an administrator on the computer and be a member of the Virtual Machine Manager Administrators security group.

To install the VMM Self-Service Portal
  1. On the product DVD or network share, double-click setup.exe.

  2. On the Setup menu, click Install VMM Self-Service Portal.

    Note
    If you have not installed Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, you must install it from within Setup before you can proceed.

  3. On the Prerequisites Check page, review any alerts or warnings about hardware that does not meet the minimum or recommended requirements or missing software prerequisites. You can continue if you receive warnings, but alerts must be resolved before you can proceed with the installation.

    Note
    If Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 is not already installed, Setup installs it automatically. Installing .NET Framework 3.0 does not interfere with the .NET Framework 2.0 components.

  4. On the Web Server Settings page, do the following:

    • In the Virtual Machine Manager server area, specify the name of the VMM server you want the VMM Self-Service Portal to connect to and the port setting that you want the VMM Self-Service Portal to use to communicate with the VMM server.
      Important
      The port setting that you assign must identically match the port settings that you assigned when installing the VMM server. The default port setting is 8100. It is a best practice to not use default settings.

    • In the Web server area, specify the port that you want self-service users to use to connect to the Self-Service Portal.
      Note
      If the default port setting (80) for the VMM Self-Service Portal is being used by another Web site, you must either use a different dedicated port setting or specify a host header for the portal. For more information about host headers, see article 190008, "HOW TO: Use Host Header Names to Host Multiple Sites from One IP Address in IIS 5.0" in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=88875).

  5. On the Summary of Settings page, review your settings and do one of the following:

    1. Click Previous to change any settings.
    2. Click Install to install the VMM Self-Service Portal.
  6. On the Installation page, you can view the status of setup and after setup is complete, or you can click the link in the Status window to check for the latest VMM updates.

  7. To complete the configuration of the VMM Self-Service Portal, you must identify the Web server in the Virtual Machine Manager Administrator Console and perform additional configuration steps. For more information about configuring self-service, see Configuring Self-Service.
