Reinstalling VMM with a Retained Database

When you uninstall System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) server, you have the option of removing your database or retaining your database so that you can reinstall the VMM server using the retained database and resume managing hosts in the same host environment. Use the following procedure to reinstall VMM with a retained database.

Warning

Before uninstalling a VMM server that uses a remote VMM database that you want to retain and reuse, ensure that the remote SQL service is running and that is using an administrator account. Otherwise, the VMM server role will not be removed from the database and reinstallation will fail.

How to reinstall the VMM server with a retained VMM database

  1. On the product DVD or network share, double-click setup.exe.

  2. On the Setup menu, click Install Virtual Machine Manager server.

  3. On the Installation Settings page, select Use an existing instance of SQL Server, and then click Next.

  4. On the SQL Server Settings page, do one of the following:

    1. Select Use a SQL Server instance on the Virtual Machine Manager server, enter the SQL instance name and the Database name of the retained database, and then click Next.
    2. Select Use a remote instance using the following settings, enter the Server name, user domain and credentials, the SQL instance name and the Database name of the retained database, and then click Next.
  5. On the Library Share Settings page, select the option to either create a new library share or use an existing library share.

    Important

During installation, Setup creates a default VMM library and library share on the local VMM server. The library share name is MSSCVMMLibrary and the default path for the folder is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Virtual Machine Manager Library Files. You can change the location and share name during Setup; however, after setup is complete you cannot remove or relocate this default library server or its library share.

  6. On the Port Assignments page, assign the ports you want to use for the VMM connections.

    Important

The port settings that you assign for the VMM server must identically match the port settings that you assign for the related VMM components that the VMM server communicates with. For more information about assigning ports, see the "About Assigning Ports in Virtual Machine Manager" topic (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=102100).

  7. On the Summary of Settings page, review your settings and do one of the following:

    1. Click Previous to change any settings.
    2. Click Install to install the VMM server.
  8. On the Installation page, you can view the status of setup and after setup is complete, you can click the link in the Status window to check online for the latest VMM updates.
