How to Create a Host Group

Use the New host group action in Hosts view to create a new host group. Then add hosts to the host group by using the Move to host group action or by dragging and dropping hosts to the host group.

The new host group is a container that you can use to group hosts and the virtual machines on those hosts in a meaningful way in Hosts view and Virtual Machines view. After you create a host group, you can modify its properties to configure host reserves, which determine how much CPU, memory, disk space, disk I/O capacity, and network capacity are set aside for host operating systems on hosts in the host group. You also can create self-service policies for the host group to allow virtual machine self-service on hosts in the host group. For more information, see How to Modify the Properties of a Host Group.

Host groups are hierarchical. You can create a host group within a host group. All host groups and all hosts belong to the root host group, All Hosts. For information about inheritance of host reserves and self-service policies by child host groups, see About Host Groups.

To create a host group

  1. In Hosts view, navigate to the host group that will be the parent of the new host group in the navigation pane. To add the host as a child host group of the root host group, click All Hosts.

  2. With the parent host group selected, in the Actions pane, click New Host Group.

A new folder, called New host group, is added to the navigation pane. The folder name is selected so you can rename the host group.

  3. To name the host group, type the new name at the selection, and press ENTER.

    Note

Host group names have a 64-character maximum and cannot contain the following characters: \ /:*?"<>.".

  4. To enter a description of the host group, modify the resources reserved for host operating systems on the hosts, and create self-service policies for the host group, modify the properties of the host group by using the Properties action. For more information, see How to Modify the Properties of a Host Group.

  5. To add hosts to the host group, drag and drop the hosts to the host group in the main console or use the Move host group action. For more information, see How to Move Hosts to a Host Group.
