"Run as" Account Requirements for Virtual Server

If you want to start the virtual machine automatically when Virtual Server starts, you must specify an account for Virtual Server to run under (the "Run as" account). Also, if the virtual machine will access an ISO image stored in the library, the virtual machine must run under an account that has access to the library share that stores the image file.

Important

If you do not specify a "Run as" account, the virtual machine runs under the account of the user who started the virtual machine and you cannot run scripts on the virtual machine.

This account is specified on the Additional Properties page of the New Virtual Machine wizard or on the Virtual Server Actions tab in the Virtual Machine Properties dialog box.

For enhanced security, you can create a special account that has a low level of permissions. The following table describes the minimum permissions that are required for different file and folder types.

File or Folder Minimum Permissions

.vmc file

Read Data, Write Data, and Execute File

.vhd file

Read Data, Read Attributes, Read Extended Attributes, and Write Data

.vnc file (if the virtual machine is connected to a virtual network)

Execute File, Read Data, Read Attributes, and Read Permissions

Library share containing a shared ISO image (if the virtual machine will access an ISO image in the library)

Read Data and Read Attributes
