About Library View

Because the Virtual Machine Manager library is a catalog of resources that include both physical files on library shares and configurations in the VMM database, the navigation pane must display both types of resources at the following tree levels:

  • Level 1.   The top node, Library Server, displays all library resources—including all files that are indexed in VMM and all configurations in the VMM database.
  • Level 2.   At this level, the tree contains a node for each library server and a final node, Profiles, which displays all guest operating system profiles and hardware profiles that have been configured. Profiles are displayed separately from library servers because no physical files are associated with the profiles.
  • Level 3.   At this level, each library server contains two types of node at its top level:
    • A node representing each library share on the server that has been added to the library. You can navigate through folders on a library share to display resources stored anywhere on the share.
    • A VMs and Templates node, which displays virtual machines that have been stored on the library server and templates that are associated with files on library shares on the server.
Virtual machines and templates appear in the VMs and Templates folder on each library server that stores any of their related physical files. If a template is using VHD1 from Server1 and VHD2 from Server2, the template appears in the VMs and Templates folder on both Server1 and Server2.
Although its files are moved to a library share when a virtual machine is stored in the library, the virtual machine's configuration file (.vmc) and any virtual hard disks (.vhd) that are attached to the virtual machine are not indexed and thus are not displayed.

Grouping Resources by Library Group

Library servers have a library group property that you can use to group library servers in Library view. After setting library group properties on your library servers, you can add the Library Group column to the display and then group your library resources by library group. For more information about customizing the results display, see How to Customize Your Views.
