How to Configure VMRC Access to Virtual Machines

Use the following procedure to configure access to virtual machines through the Virtual Machine Remote Control (VMRC) client in Virtual Server. You can change the port used for connections to the VMRC client, and you can specify VMRC access accounts to give administrators access to all virtual machines on all managed hosts.

When an administrator connects to a deployed virtual machine from the Virtual Machine Manager Administrator Console, the connection is made through the Virtual Machine Remote Control (VMRC) client in Virtual Server. To gain access to a virtual machine through VMRC, an administrator must be logged on under an account that has administrative credentials on the local host computer.

Note

Although self-service users also use VMRC to connect to their virtual machines, VMRC access accounts are not used to grant self-service users access to their virtual machines. Instead, a VMRC Access permission is configured in the self-service policy. The VMRC Access permission grants access only to the virtual machines that the user owns.

To configure VMRC access to virtual machines

  1. In Administration view, select Settings in the navigation pane.

  2. In the results pane, select VMRC Settings.

  3. In the Actions pane, under Settings, click Modify.

  4. In the VMRC Settings dialog box, specify the default port to use for connections to the VMRC client. By default, port 5900 is used.

Any administrator who has administrator credentials on a virtual machine host can connect to the virtual machines on that host. The VMRC access account is used to grant an administrator or group access to all virtual machines deployed on all managed hosts.

  5. To add a VMRC access account, perform the following steps:

    1. Click Add.
    2. In the Select User or Group dialog box, type or select the user or group account that you want to grant VMRC access, and then click OK.

    Note

A new VMRC access account enables access only to virtual machines created after the account is added.

  6. Repeat step 5 to add each account.

To remove a VMRC access account

  1. In Administration view, select Settings in the navigation pane.

  2. In the results pane, select VMRC Settings.

  3. In the Actions pane, under Settings, click Modify.

  4. In the VMRC Settings dialog box, select the account that you want to remove from VMRC access and then click Remove.
