Virtual Machine Manager Database Software Requirements

System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) uses a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database to store the information you view in the VMM Administrator Console, such as managed virtual machines, virtual machine hosts, virtual machine libraries, jobs, and other virtual machine–related data.

You can specify an existing local or remote instance of a supported version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

Note

If you do not specify an existing instance of SQL Server 2005, Setup installs SQL Server Express Edition SP2 on the local computer. This also installs SQL Server 2005 Tools and creates an SQL Server instance named MICROSOFT$VMM$ on the local computer.

The following table lists the supported versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

Supported SQL Server versions

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1 or later

SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition

SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition SP1 or later

SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition

SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition SP1 or later

Note

To enable the reporting feature of VMM, you must use a full version of SQL Server Standard or Enterprise Edition and install System Center Operations Manager 2007. For more information, see Virtual Machine Manager Reporting System Requirements.

For information about configuring a remote instance of SQL Server for VMM, see the "Configuring a Remote Instance of SQL Server" topic in the VMM Help (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98646).

Important

If you use a remote instance of SQL Server, it is a best practice to use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption to enhance the security of your SQL Server connection. You can enable SSL encryption by modifying the SQL Server connection string as described in article 316898 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=89722).
