Virtual Machine Manager Server Software Requirements

The following software must be installed prior to installing the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) server:

An operating system supported by VMM.
For more information about operating systems supported by VMM, see Supported Operating Systems for Virtual Machine Manager.
Windows Remote Management (WinRM).
You must install this software from the following site: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=84599.

Note

If you have previously enabled WinRM by using the Management and Monitoring Tools components group in Add/Remove Windows Components, that version will not work with Virtual Machine Manager. You must install the version of this software from the following site, which will overwrite your exiting version https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=84599.
Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
For more information about supported versions of SQL Server, see Virtual Machine Manager Database System Requirements.

Note

If you do not specify an existing instance of SQL Server 2005, Setup installs SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 on the local computer. This also installs SQL Server 2005 Tools and creates an SQL Server instance named MICROSOFT$VMM$ on the local computer.

If not already installed, the following software is installed during Setup:

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0.

Note

During installation of a non-English version of VMM, Setup installs the English version of .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 and does not install either .NET Framework language pack. Unless you install the .NET Framework language packs, any .NET Framework error messages will appear in English.
