Software Requirements Installed During Virtual Machine Manager Setup

During the installation of Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2007, some required software is installed automatically. This topic describes which software is automatically installed for each VMM component.

Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) requires a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database to store the information you view in the VMM Administrator Console, such as managed virtual machines, virtual machine hosts, virtual machine libraries, agents, jobs, and other virtual machine–related data.

If you do not specify an existing instance of SQL Server 2005, Setup installs Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition SP2 on the local computer. This also installs SQL Server 2005 Tools and creates an SQL Server instance named MICROSOFT$VMM$ on the local computer.

The following software is installed during the setup of the VMM server:

• Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

• Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0.

  Note

  During installation of a non-English version of VMM, Setup installs the English version of .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 and does not install either .NET Framework language pack. Unless you install the .NET Framework language packs, any .NET Framework error messages will appear in English.

The following software is installed during setup of VMM Administrator Console:

• Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

• Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0.

Unless you install the .NET Framework language packs, any .NET Framework error messages will appear in English.

When you add a virtual machine host, VMM installs a VMM agent and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1, if it is not already installed.

When you add a library server, VMM installs a VMM agent.
