To configure content types for HTTP compression

  1. In the console tree of ISA Server Management, click General.

  2. In the details pane, click Define HTTP Compression Preferences.

  3. On the Content Types tab, select one of the following options:

    • Compress all content types except selected to specify the content types that will be excluded (all others will be included).
    • Compress the selected content types only to specify the content types that will be included (all others will be excluded)

  4. In Content Types, select specific content types to be excluded or included.

Note

To open ISA Server Management, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft ISA Server, and then click ISA Server Management.
For ISA Server 2006 Enterprise Edition, expand Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2006, expand Arrays, expand Array_Name, expand Configuration and then click General.
For ISA Server 2006 Standard Edition, expand Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2006, expand Server_Name, expand Configuration and then click General.

Important

You can add new content types, and then apply HTTP compression to these new types. For instructions, see M_P_H_ContentCreate.
The following content types cannot be compressed because they are already compressed, or cannot be compressed because they are provided as a stream:

  • video
  • audio
  • application/x-tar
  • x-world/x-vrml
  • application/zip
  • application/x-gzip
  • application/x-zip-compressed
  • application/x-compress
  • application/x-compressed
  • application/x-spoon
