The goal of migrating is to transfer your current protection configuration to DPM 2007 while keeping your DPM 2006 shadow copies available for recovery until they expire. You can use the migration process to transfer your existing data protection infrastructure gradually to DPM 2007. In addition, you can use the migration process to integrate DPM servers from multiple domains into a single DPM 2007 server.

After you deploy DPM 2007, you can migrate each DPM 2006 server at any time and in any order. If the capacity of your DPM 2007 storage pool is sufficient, you can migrate multiple DPM 2006 servers to a single DPM 2007 server.

When protection is transferred to the DPM 2007 server, you should maintain the DPM 2006 server until the DPM 2006 shadow copies are no longer needed. After migration, end-user recovery of files from a protected server uses the DPM 2007 server (if end-user recovery is enabled on the DPM 2007 server). Data from the DPM 2006 shadow copies can be recovered only by an administrator using the DPM 2006 server.

DPM 2007 and DPM 2006 can coexist in the same network. You can deploy DPM 2007 and begin protecting new data while you are using your existing DPM 2006 servers to continue protection of the file servers that are currently protected by DPM 2006. A server can be protected by only one DPM server. No special steps are required for DPM 2007 and DPM 2006 coexistence; follow the instructions in the DPM Deployment Guide (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=66734) to deploy DPM 2007 without migrating DPM 2006 protection groups.

Summary of upgrade options:

• Migrate the protection of all file servers that are protected by DPM 2006 to DPM 2007.

  -or-

  Migrate the protection of some of the file servers that are protected by DPM 2006 to DPM 2007, and continue DPM 2006 protection for the file servers that you do not migrate.

• Migrate the protection of all file servers that are protected by a single DPM 2006 server to a single DPM 2007 server, retaining your current DPM infrastructure.

  -or-

  Migrate the protection of all file servers that are protected by multiple DPM 2006 servers to a single DPM 2007 server, consolidating your DPM workloads.
