Storage Pool Changes

Applies To: System Center Data Protection Manager 2007

In DPM 2006, disks that are added to the DPM storage pool are reformatted and, if necessary, converted to dynamic disks. DPM 2006 uses all the space on the disk in the storage pool.

In DPM 2007, DPM uses only unallocated space on disks that are added to the storage pool. If you add a disk to the DPM 2007 storage pool that has existing volumes on it, DPM cannot use the space in the existing volumes.

Important

To make an entire disk available to the storage pool, delete all existing volumes from the disk before you add it to the storage pool.

You can use existing volumes on a disk that you add to the storage pool for DPM storage by selecting the volumes as custom volumes when you create a protection group. Custom volumes are volumes that are not in the DPM storage pool and are specified to store the replica and recovery points for a protection group member. You must manage the space in custom volumes manually by using Disk Management. DPM cannot manage the space in custom volumes. Be aware that you will need two custom volumes for each protection group member to which you want to assign custom volumes—one for the replica volume and one for the recovery point volume.
