Applies To: System Center Data Protection Manager 2007

The following table describes DPM 2006 terms that have changed in DPM 2007.

Comparison of DPM 2006 and DPM 2007 Terminology

DPM 2006 term DPM 2007 term Explanation

File agent

Protection agent

DPM 2007 can protect both file and application data. The name of the agent is changed to include all types of protected computers.

Shadow copy

Recovery point

Shadow copies are created for file data recovery. The method that DPM 2007 uses to provide for application data recovery depends on the specific application that you are protecting. Recovery point is a general term for the date and time of a previous version of a data source that is available for recovery from media that is managed by DPM.

For more information about how DPM creates recovery points, see File Data Synchronization and Application Data Synchronization.

Replica area and shadow copy area

Replica volume and recovery point volume

These terms are used when you allocate disk space for a protection group member. In DPM 2006, the replica and shadow points are stored on the same volume. In DPM 2007, the replica and recovery points are stored on separate volumes.

Agent license

Standard license and enterprise license

In DPM 2006, an agent license is used when a file agent is installed on a file server.

In DPM 2007, no license is used when a protection agent is installed on a computer. A license is used only when data on the computer is added to a protection group. The type of data that is being protected determines the type of license that is used. For more information, see DPM Licensing.
