Planning Business Modeler

Updated: 2009-04-30

Planning Business Modeler is the primary interface for creating and managing business models, which are the basic units of data storage in Planning Server, and their associated model metadata. The models that are created by using Planning Business Modeler integrate disparate but relevant information about a company into a tangible view that you can use to accurately measure performance, plan, budget, and forecast. By using these Planning Server models and predefined and user-defined business dimensions, you can build powerful applications that perform complex planning, budgeting, forecasting, and consolidating. You can manage security for these operations as well.

Planning Business Modeler runs locally on each user's computer, but all the models and schemas are based on Planning Server. PerformancePoint Planning application business objects are created or updated when a model or model site is saved. When the model site is deployed, the model structure, rules, and security are used to create or update the SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services cubes.

See the online Help about PerformancePoint Planning Business Modeler for detailed information about Planning Business Modeler functionality.

Planning Command Utility (PPSCmd.exe)

The Planning Command Utility (PPSCmd.exe) allows scriptable access to some Planning Business Modeler tasks. It assists in the administration and limited modification of Planning Server. The tool consists of 12 commands that allow for scriptable actions with Planning Server :

  • Delete an application, model, or dimension from a Planning system.

  • Export specified dimensions and hierarchies to a .csv file.

  • Display the Help option.

  • Import dimension members to an application dimension or hierarchy by using a .csv file.

  • Import security roles and user definitions to an application where users and roles are defined in a .csv file.

  • Migrate a Planning application from a source server to a destination server.

  • Deploy a model site and provide for a command to force a full redeployment of the model site.

  • Create metadata structures for applications, dimensions, models, and hierarchies.

  • Reprocess model data in the Analysis Services cube.

  • Execute a sequence of Planning Command Utility commands defined in a file. The commands are executed in the order that they are described.

  • Synchronize and load data between a staging database and an application database.

  • Upgrade a Planning application created in an earlier CTP release to be compatible with the current version of Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007.

See the PerformancePoint Server 2007 Operations Guide for detailed information about Planning Command Utility features.

Both Planning Business Modeler and the Planning Command Utility use SOAP requests to access the Planning Web Service server.
