Migrating the management server component

Checklist

The following is a checklist of the high-level tasks required for you to successfully migrate the Client Security management server component. This checklist is included to help you perform the migration procedures. Detailed steps follow the checklist.

Migrating the Client Security management server component involves installing the component on the target server, verifying its functionality, and removing the component from the source management server.

Preparing the target computer

Prior to installing the management server component on the target management server, you must remove any previously installed MOM or System Center Operations Manager agents.

To uninstall MOM or System Center Operations Manager agents

  1. On the target management server, in Add or Remove Programs, select either Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Agent or System Center Operations Manager 2007 Agent, and then click Remove.

  2. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Yes.

  3. Click Finish.

Installing the new management server component

All other Client Security components must be in their final locations before you can migrate the management server to a new server.

Important

If migrating multiple Client Security server components, you must migrate the management server component last.

To install the Client Security management server component on the target management server

  1. Using an account that has local administrator privileges on all of the Client Security servers, log on to the target management server, insert the Client Security CD, and run the Setup wizard.

  2. On the Component Installation page, select the Management server check box, clear the other check boxes, and then click Next.

  3. On the Install Location page, enter the location where you want the Setup wizard to install Client Security files.

  4. On the Verifying Settings and Requirements page, verify your system requirements, and then click Next.

  5. On the Completing Setup page, verify that you have successfully installed Client Security, and then click Close.

Configuring the new management server component

After completing the installation of the management component on the target server, you must complete the Client Security configuration wizard. During the configuration wizard, you specify the location of all the other Client Security components.

Configuring the new management server

  1. On the new management server, start the Client Security console. The Configuration Wizard should start automatically; if it does not, click Action, and then click and Configure.

  2. On the Before You Begin page, click Next.

  3. On the Collection Server and Database page, in the Collection database text box, enter the name of the current collection database server (or servername\instancename if you are not using a default SQL Server instance), and then click Next.

  4. On the Reporting Database page, do the following:

    1. In the Reporting database box, enter the name of the current reporting database server (or servername\instancename if you are not using a default SQL Server instance).

    2. In the Reporting account box, enter the user name and password for the reporting account.

    3. Click Next.

  5. On the Reporting Server page, do the following:

    1. In the Reporting server box, enter the name of the current reporting server.

    2. In the URL for Report Server and URL for Report Manager boxes, ensure the default values are entered.

    3. Click Next.

  6. On the Verifying Settings and Requirements page, verify your system requirements, and then click Next. If you receive an error, you cannot continue configuring Client Security. If you receive a warning or error, see the following resources for more information:

Verifying communication

After completing the Client Security Configuration wizard, you must verify the functionality of the new management server.

To verify communication

  1. On the target management server, start the Client Security console and click Scan Now.

  2. Select Scan a specific computer, and then enter the name of a managed computer in the Name box.

    Note

    You cannot specify the computer by IP address. You must use the computer name.

  3. Select the type of scan you want to perform: Quick scan or Full scan.

  4. Click the Scan Now button.

  5. After the scan has completed, start Internet Explorer and browse to https://reportservername/Reports

  6. On the SQL Server Reporting Services Home page, click Microsoft Operations Manager Reporting, click Microsoft Forefront Client Security, and then click Computer Detail.

  7. In the Computer Name text box, type the name of the computer you just scanned, and then click View Report.

If any of the verifying communication steps fail, verify you have performed all previous steps. If communications continue to fail, contact Microsoft product support.

Uninstalling the management server component from the source server

The final step in the migration of the Client Security management server component is to uninstall the management server component from the source server. This should be done only after successful verification of communication.
