Step 8. Plan for VoIP

Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 will reach end of support on January 9, 2018. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Planning for Enterprise Voice differs from other Office Communications Server planning tasks in that you must consider the impact on both your telephony and IP infrastructures. Microsoft's software-powered VoIP solution, however, has a modest hardware requirement and does not require replacing your existing PBX.

The topics in this section will help you to:

  • Determine the number and distribution of users.

  • Select the deployment option that best fits your organization.

  • Determine the number and distribution of media gateways that your organization requires.

  • Define routing rules and user privileges for you Enterprise Voice deployment.

  • Plan for call notification, voice mail, and other call services provided by Exchange Unified Messaging.

  • Move users to Enterprise Voice.
