Introduction

This guide contains detailed information about how to set up a lab environment to be used in the Building Phase of a Microsoft® Deployment Solution Accelerator project to deploy a Windows® operating system, the 2007 Microsoft Office system, and Microsoft Office 2003. Microsoft Deployment is the next version of Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007.

Note   In this document, Windows applies to the Windows Vista®, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Windows Server® 2008, and Windows Server 2003 operating system unless otherwise noted.

Prerequisites

Preparing a lab for a Microsoft Deployment project requires personnel who understand and meet certain prerequisites. Those who execute this deployment process should be familiar with the following concepts:

  • The Active Directory® directory service infrastructure, including logical and physical design of infrastructure

  • Server capacity planning

  • Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack (SP1) or later

  • Windows XP with SP2 or later

  • Windows Vista

  • Windows Deployment Services

  • Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007

  • Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003

  • Microsoft SQL Server™ 2005

  • Network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls

  • Networking services infrastructure, including Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), and remote access

  • Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT) 3.0.1

  • Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) 2.0
