How To Configure Windows Installer Source Update Management

Applies To: System Center Configuration Manager 2007, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

To enable source location updates to the Windows Installer product, the Windows Installer product code and file name must be associated with a Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 program. After a distribution point is added to the package, Configuration Manager 2007 generates a policy update for all Configuration Manager 2007 clients. After they receive the policy, clients update their source paths for the Windows Installer application specified in the package.

No advertisements are necessary to allow the Windows Installer information to be sent to the Configuration Manager 2007 clients. You can create a Configuration Manager 2007 package, distribute it to your distribution points, and update the Windows Installer information for the package, and all of your clients will now point their source locations to the Configuration Manager 2007 distribution points that have the package.

noteNote
If you have several Windows Installer products in the same Configuration Manager 2007 package, add each product code and corresponding Windows Installer file name in a separate Configuration Manager 2007 program. Configuration Manager 2007 will not allow the same product code to reside within a Configuration Manager 2007 package more than once.

To enable the Windows Installer source location

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Software Distribution / Packages.

  2. Expand the package to which the program belongs, and then click Programs.

  3. Right-click the program name, and then click Properties.

  4. On the Windows Installer tab, click Import to import a Windows Installer file. The Windows Installer product code is filled in automatically.

  5. Click OK.

To disable the Windows Installer source location
