Communicator Mobile Frequently Asked Questions

Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 will reach end of support on January 9, 2018. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

What is “CoMo”?

CoMo is the unofficial short name for Microsoft® Office Communicator Mobile.

What devices will run Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile (2007 release)?

Microsoft® Office Communicator Mobile (2007 release) can be installed on any mobile device (smartphone, Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition) that runs Microsoft Windows Mobile® 5.0 or Windows Mobile 6.0.

Is my device operating system upgradeable to Windows Mobile 5.0 or Windows Mobile 6.0?

Windows Mobile powered devices are sold and supported by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or mobile operators. Please consult with them.

Can I use Microsoft ActiveSync 3.8 or ActiveSync 4.1 technology to install Communicator Mobile (2007 release) on my device?

No. Microsoft ActiveSync® 4.2, ActiveSync 4.5 or Windows Mobile Device Center 6 technology is required. If you use an earlier version of ActiveSync, you will receive an error message indicating that Application Manager cannot install Communicator Mobile because of an invalid setup file. See the Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile (2007 Release) Planning and Deployment Guide for more information about installing Communicator Mobile.

You can download ActiveSync 4.2 from https://r.office.microsoft.com/r/rlidCoMo2?p1=DL_activesync42&p2=FAQ. You can download ActiveSync 4.5 from https://r.office.microsoft.com/r/rlidCoMo2?p1=DL_activesync45&p2=FAQ. You can download Windows Mobile Device Center 6 from https://r.office.microsoft.com/r/rlidCoMo2?p1=DL_WMDC6&p2=FAQ.

Can I install Communicator Mobile (2007 release) on my device’s storage card?

No. Installing Communicator Mobile (2007 release) on a storage card is not supported because a device does not necessarily immediately detect a storage card when the device starts. As a result, Communicator Mobile’s auto-start feature cannot function as intended. Installing Communicator Mobile to a storage card is also not supported because when a device’s battery is low, the operating system stops running programs that are installed on the device’s storage card.

What server infrastructure is required to support Communicator Mobile?

Communicator Mobile is a client of Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007. In order to support Communicator Mobile with users who are connecting over an internal network, you must deploy Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007. If you also want to support users who connect over external Wi-Fi or mobile wireless network connections, you also need to deploy Office Communications Server 2007, Edge Server. If you currently support external users for Office Communications Server, no additional server hardware is required.

Is Office Communications Server external user support mandatory?

It depends. External user support is required in order for Communicator Mobile to work over mobile wireless networks (for example, GPRS, 1xRTT, or EV-DO). External user support is not required if you use Communicator Mobile only in a fixed wireless network (for example, internal Wi-Fi) within your organization’s network. You can enable external access on a per user basis.

What ports are required for external access?

In order for external access to succeed, Communicator Mobile needs to use TLS transport. By default, port 5061 is used, but other ports, such as port 443, can be used for external access. Communicator Mobile clients must be configured to include the port information in the server address. The correct format is <server address>:<port number>. For example, the client should be configured to use sip.contoso.com:443 as the external server address if the Office Communications Server 2007, Access Edge Server has been configured to use default remote client access settings. For more information about this port configuration on the Edge Server, see the Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Edge Server Deployment Guide.

Will Communicator Mobile have the same infrastructure requirements as Communicator Web Access?

Communicator Mobile is a native Windows Mobile application; Microsoft Office Communicator Web Access is a Web client. Therefore, Communicator Mobile does not interact with the server running Communicator Web Access. Communicator Mobile users can, however, appear as if they are external Office Communications Server users if they connect by using external Wi-Fi networks or mobile wireless network connections. If you plan to support external connections by Communicator Mobile users, an Edge Server is required, and you must enable external user access in Office Communications Server.

Can I support both Communicator Mobile (2005 release) users and Communicator Mobile (2007 release) users?

If you deployed Office Communications Server 2007 Beta 2 release or later, you can support both Communicator Mobile (2005 release) users and Communicator Mobile (2007 release) users. However, ensure that you and your users understand that functionality is limited for users of an earlier version of Communicator Mobile. Also, users that sign in to Communicator Mobile (2007 release), Communicator Web Access (2007 release) or Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 on the desktop can no longer sign in using earlier versions of any of these programs.

Will Communicator Mobile connect to the server over HTTPS/TLS?

Communicator Mobile can connect to the server using HTTPS/TLS or TCP. TLS is the preferred mode of connection and is required when the client connects to the server while using an external Wi-Fi or mobile wireless network. In some corporate network Wi-Fi environments (inside the firewall), you could use TCP.

Does Communicator Mobile support authentication that uses NTLM v2?

Communicator Mobile supports authentication that uses NTLM v1 or NTLM v2.

Is public IM connectivity supported with Communicator Mobile?

Yes, public IM connectivity and federated contacts can be added by using Communicator Mobile, if the Office Communications Server 2007 network that you use has been configured for public IM connectivity and federation.

Is Office Communicator required for Communicator Mobile (2007 release) users?

No, but we strongly recommend that you use Office Communicator 2007 in conjunction with Communicator Mobile (2007 release). Office Communicator 2007 is useful for certain features, such as creating and managing groups and gathering and providing your Microsoft Exchange Server calendar information. For users who run desktop and mobile device clients simultaneously, Communicator is required so that both the desktop and mobile device client will receive a new instant messaging (IM) invitation.

Why do I receive the message “Unable to connect to network” when I try to sign in through Communicator Mobile, even though I am connected to the network through ActiveSync or Wi-Fi?

Verify that you have correctly configured a proxy server for your mobile device. For information about how to configure a proxy server for your mobile device, see the Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile (2007 Release) User’s Guide, or see the documentation for your mobile device.

What is MPOP?

MPOP stands for multiple points of presence, a feature of Office Communications Server and Office Communicator 2007. You can have multiple Communicator clients running simultaneously; for instance, on your work computer, your home computer, and your mobile device. When you receive an invitation to a new conversation, the server determines the most appropriate devices to receive the request, so that you can accept the invitation on whatever device you are using at the time.

Does the user interface adapt to a mobile device with a square screen?

Communicator Mobile is designed and tested for low and high resolution, and for portrait and landscape display formats. Communicator Mobile has not been tested on devices with square screen layouts.

Why is my calendar information not displayed to my contacts even though I am signed in?

Communicator Mobile does not integrate with the calendar information on your mobile device. Calendar information is only displayed to your Communicator contacts when you are also signed in to Office Communicator 2007 on your desktop computer.
