Director Topologies

Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 will reach end of support on January 9, 2018. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

The Office Communications Server 2007 Director is supported only in the internal, trusted network. The Director is deployed between the Access Edge Server and the Front End Server of the Standard Edition server or Enterprise pool. A Director is recommended but not required for any topology, with or without external users.

A Director can be deployed by using either a Standard Edition or an Enterprise Edition license and product key. The Director is supported in the following topologies, but it is not required for either external or internal user access:

  • A single Standard Edition server that is configured as a Director for internal users, external users, or both. Using separate Directors for internal users and external users is recommended.

  • Multiple Standard Edition servers that are configured as Directors and deployed as an array behind a hardware load balancer for internal users, external users, or both. Using separate Directors for internal users and external users is recommended.

  • An Enterprise pool of Directors that is deployed as an array behind a hardware load balancer for internal, external, or both types of users. Using separate Directors for internal users and external users is recommended.

It is recommended (but not required) that the Address Book Server Role be deactivated on any Front-End configured as a Director.

For details, see the Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Edge Server Deployment Guide.
