Upgrading from DPM 2007 Beta 2 to DPM 2007 RTM

Applies To: System Center Data Protection Manager 2007

Following are the steps you must perform for a successful upgrade from the Beta 2 version of System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007 to DPM 2007 RTM:

Step 1: Before you begin the upgrade

Step 2: Install DPM 2007

Step 3: Copy eseutil.exe and ese.dll

Step 4: Update the protection agents

Step 5: Perform a consistency check

Step 6: After you perform the upgrade

The upgrade may take a few hours to complete depending on the size of your DPM installation and how long you have been running a previous version of DPM.

Note

DPM does not support upgrading from DPM 2007 Beta 2 to DPM 2007 RTM if you are using a remote computer running the default instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on the target computer.

  • Upgrading DPM Management Shell from Beta 2 to RTM

Step 1: Before You Begin the Upgrade

Assign the required permissions

If you are upgrading from a DPM 2007 Beta 2 installation and are running a remote instance of SQL Server 2005, before you perform the upgrade you must have administrator permissions on the computer running the remote instance of SQL Server. After the upgrade is complete, administrator permissions are no longer required.

Verify that you have enough disk space

Before you upgrade, you must verify that you have enough disk space to perform the upgrade on the DPM server. To calculate the required disk space, do the following:

  1. Open the folder that contains the DPMDB database. The default location for the DPMDB database is <drive letter>:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\DPMDB.

  2. Find the size of the DPMDB database. Verify that there is at least 1 gigabyte (GB) of free disk space in addition to the DPMDB database. For example, if the size of the .mdf and .ldf files is 900 megabytes (MB), you must have at least 1.9 GBs of free disk space before you perform the upgrade.

Backup the DPM database

Before you upgrade from a pre-release version of DPM 2007 to DPM 2007 RTM, we recommend that you back up the DPM database. For information about how to back up the DPM database, in the DPM Operations Guide, see "Backup of DPM Servers" in Preparing for Disaster Recovery (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=91860).

Backup eseutil.exe and ese.dll

Before you upgrade to DPM 2007 RTM, you must copy the eseutil.exe and ese.dll files from your DPM 2007 pre-release installation directory to an alternate location on the DPM server.

Install Knowledge Base article 940349

Before you install protection agents on the computers you are going to protect, you must apply hotfix 940349. For more details, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 940349, "Hotfix rollup of VSS reliability, scalability, and memory optimization" (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=99034).

Install Knowledge Base article 941422

You must install Knowledge Base article "Update for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0" (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=100392) on all computers running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Verify that there are no missing disks or volumes

Before you perform the upgrade, verify that there are no missing disks or volumes that DPM uses by stopping protection or restoring the disk. The DPM upgrade must enumerate the volumes that DPM uses and lockdown the security access permissions. If the volume or disk that DPM uses is missing when you perform the upgrade, the missing volumes will not be secured.

Using a remote external instance of SQL Server

If you are using a remote external instance of SQL Server, you must do the following before you perform the upgrade:

  1. Uninstall the existing version of the DPM support files from the remote instance of SQL Server.

  2. Install the latest version of SQLPrep.msi located at DPM2007\msi\SqlPrep on the DPM 2007 DVD or the DPM 2007 download package.

Verify that the user account that you will be using to run the SQL Server service and the SQL Server Agent service has read and execute permissions to the SQL Server installation location.

Verify that you are not running an expired installation of SQL Server 2005 Evaluation Edition

If you are running an instance of SQL Server 2005 Evaluation Edition, we recommend that you upgrade your installation of SQL Server 2005 to a production environment. The upgrade will fail if you are running an expired installation of SQL Server 2005 Evaluation Edition.

Remove the DPMDBReaders group from access to the DPMDB database

The DPMDBReaders group that was created during DPM installation contains all accounts that have read-only access to the DPMDB database. Access to the DPMDB database must be removed before you perform the upgrade.

Step 2: Install DPM 2007

Use the DPM Setup Wizard in Upgrade mode to install DPM 2007. For information about DPM 2007 system requirements, see DPM 2007 System Requirements (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=108683).

Note

During Setup, DPM does not support changing the installation location from the one you chose when you installed the pre-release version of DPM 2007. However, you can change the path to where you want to install the DPMDB database.

To install DPM 2007

  1. Log on to the DPM server by using a domain user account that is a member of the local administrators group.

  2. Insert the Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 product DVD in the DVD-ROM drive. If the DPM Setup Wizard does not start automatically, double-click Setup.exe in the root folder of the DVD.

    -Or-

If you are installing DPM from a network share, navigate to the installation share, and then double-click Setup.exe in the root folder of the share.

  3. On the Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 page, click Install Data Protection Manager.

  4. The DPM Setup Wizard appears in Upgrade mode, prompts you to upgrade, and then guides you through the upgrade process.

  5. After the upgrade is complete, click Close.

Step 3: Copy Eseutil.exe and Ese.dll

Before you update the protection agents, copy eseutil.exe and ese.dll from the location to where you copied them in Step 1 to the DPM server at <drive letter>:\Program files\Microsoft DPM\DPM.

Step 4: Update the Protection Agents

Before you can start protecting data, you must upgrade the protection agents on each of the servers that contain data that you want to protect. In the Management task area, under Agent Status, Update required appears next to each protection agent that you need to update.

If a protection agent upgrade failure occurs, see "Protection Agent Upgrade Failure" in Troubleshooting Your DPM 2007 Upgrade.

Step 5: Perform a Consistency Check

After configuring protection, you must perform a consistency check to re-create the replicas.

To perform a consistency check

  1. In DPM Administrator Console, on the navigation bar, click Protection.

  2. In the Protection task area, select the data sources you are going to replicate on the DPM server, and then in the Actions pane, click Perform consistency check.

  3. In the Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2007 dialog box, confirm that you want to perform the consistency check.

Step 6: After You Perform the Upgrade

  • If you did not use a remote instance of SQL Server in DPM 2007 Beta 2, after you perform the upgrade, you must uninstall the MS$DPMv2beta$ instance of SQL Server.

  • After you upgrade from the Evaluation Edition of DPM 2007 to DPM 2007 RTM, if the integration between DPM and System Center Operations Manager is not working correctly, do the following:

    1. Edit the registry by using the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) on the DPM computer under the following node:

      HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager

    2. Under the node, in the DB registry, right-click Permissions.

    3. Add the DPMDBReaders$<computer name>group and provide Read permissions to the group.

  • After the DPM 2007 Beta 2 to DPM 2007 RTM upgrade is complete, in DPM Administrator Console, on the Agents tab, Upgrade Required appears for each of the protection agents. After you perform the required upgrade, the throttle settings will no longer exist. To restore the throttle settings, you must reset them after the protection agents have been upgraded.

Upgrading DPM Management Shell from Beta2 to RTM

DPM 2007 provides a set of Windows PowerShell commands that can be used as an alternative to DPM Administrator Console for performing data protection management tasks. You access the DPM cmdlets through DPM Management Shell.

To upgrade the DPM Management Shell from DPM 2007 Beta 2 to DPM 2007 RTM, install the DPM 2007 Management Shell.

To install DPM Management Shell

  1. Log on to the computer on which you want to install DPM Management Shell using a domain user account that is a member of the local administrators group.

  2. Insert the Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2007 product DVD in the DVD drive. If the DPM Setup Wizard does not start automatically, double-click Setup.exe in the root folder of the DVD.

    -Or-

If you are installing DPM from a network share, navigate to the installation share and then double-click Setup.exe in the root folder of the share.

  3. On the Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 screen, click Install DPM Management Shell.

After the installation is complete, you must manually remove the DPM Management Shell Beta 2 shortcut from the Desktop.
